Under the plan to modernize the fleet of Lighthouses & Tags, launched in 1998 by the Directorate of Maritime Affairs and Seafarers (DAMGM), the oceanic lighthouse vessel Armorique succeeded lighthouse vessel Georges de Joly dating back to 1929.
Designed by Mauric, naval architect, under the direction of CETMEF, she was built in Boulogne / Mer (Pas de Calais) by the shipyard SOCARENAM. The construction of the steel hull has been subcontracted to Alstom Leroux Naval shipyard in Saint-Malo.

Since October 2002, he was assigned to service and armed by Lighthouses & Beacons in Brest. She visits regularly Saint-Malo.

The Socarenam shipyard also built in 2003 lighthouse vessel Hauts de France. This second vessel is almost identical to Armorique with the exception of a length slightly lower and more modest accommodation.
